Mind Mapping Your Finances Into The New Year 2023
Mind mapping is a brainstorming technique that organizes information around a central topic or theme. Some of the main advantages are; finding better solutions faster, helps retain information, makes for more effective collaboration, and increases productivity. In other words, it captures thinking! A Mind Map is a diagram used to visually organize information into a hierarchy. It shows relationships among pieces of the whole. At Amida Wealth, we use a Mind Map to get to know all of our clients on a deeper level.
The History Of Mind Mapping
The term “mind mapping” was coined by Tony Buzan in 1974, a British psychology author and TV presenter. He also wrote a book on Mind Mapping, “The Mind Map Book: Unlock Your Creativity, Boost Your Memory, Change Your Life” available on Amazon. Buzan’s mind mapping technique was inspired by similar methods used by Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Joseph Donald Novak. Overall, mind maps provide a structured way to capture and organize ideas and information. Whether developing new ideas or organizing existing information, mind maps help you see how information fits together.
Mind Mapping Your Values
At Amida Wealth, out of the seven categories that make up the Total Client Profile, the most important is the one
representing our client’s values. Values are powerful because they are one of the core motivations for everything we do in our lives. They have a profound impact on every important decision we make, from what we choose to do for a living to whom we marry to how we spend our free time—in short, who we are as people.
For example, most people who are parents would tell you that they value their children above almost everything else in the world. As a result, they want to protect them, to educate them well and to set them on a smooth path in life. Financially speaking, one of the things many of these parents want to do is build an adequate college fund for their children. This is a common goal known to every financial advisor. But underlying that goal is the fundamental value of loving their children.
As important as values are, however, most people are not particularly good at articulating them. In other words, people have not thought deeply about exactly what those values are. Mind Mapping is a strategy to help uncover more of what you desire. We ask questions like, What’s important to you about money? What in particular is important to you about that value? Is there anything more important than that value? This process is especially helpful when done with an advisor guiding the process!
